Osmosis is the movement of water molecules across a selectively permeable membrane from a region of higher water potential (more dilute) to a region of lower water potential (more concentrated).
- Only solvent (water) moves; solutes remain largely on their side of the membrane.
- Osmosis is driven by differences in water potential (concentration) across the membrane.
- Important in plant hydration (turgidity), wilting (flaccidity), and plasmolysis.
- In animal cells (e.g., red blood cells) osmosis causes swelling (hypotonic) or shrinking (hypertonic).
